PROJECT TITLE - STAR (Social Transformation And Rehabilitation) DQ Project

PROJECT VISION - NO MORE BEGGARS, and RAG PICKERS

PROJECT MISSION - To motivate and create better opportunities for people in these strata to improve their standard of living for undignified and socially disconnected people

OBJECTIVES - To emancipate those caught in undignified forms of livelihood

BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION FOR THE PROJECT -
Begging is unlawful , but still in Mosques, Churches and Temples, they allow the people to beg
At religious places, the beggars are not treated well and hypocracy is practised at TCM (Temples, Churches and Mosques)
At religious places, the beggars and rag pickers are not allowed inside as they are considered to be a nuisance and people don’t pay heed to their problems and they are not treated as fellow beings
No one in the society gives them a helping hand to develop
Children are being hired for begging and they also sell illegal products
Individuals and syndicates exploit the begging system
Begging is not a dignified way of living
There is no proper intervention programme to eradicate begging.
Setting-up of DIGNITY DESK to help people in distress and trouble at Temple, Church and Mosques - Pilot Project at Kodambakkam.

INTERVENTION STRATEGY FOR BEGGARS - At Mosques Churches Temples, through local Social Workers. Deploy Dignity Quotient sensitization inputs, through ‘spirit-mind-body synergy’ program.
BENEFITS: Offer alternative employment as Clean Street Campaign Animators (CSCA) with corporate support. CSCAs will promote relevant messages and also help to keep a sector of streets clean. Being useful to society can help them come out of the deplorable habit of begging for living.

INTERVENTION STRATEGY FOR RAG-PICKERS - Deploy Dignity Quotient sensitization with ‘spirit-mind-body synergy’ program; Coupled with Basic English language and positive interpersonal skills development. Transform Rag-pickers to Recycle Material Agents who collect from sources (not from bin). Over a period they can become service /product promoters in the neighbourhoods. They enhance their skill-sets and use it gainfully and also improve their quality of life.
BENEFITS: Creates employment opportunities for the rag pickers Inspires and provide better standards of living for rag picker
Improves the recycle material handling system and integrates the Rag-Pickers in them.
